There's always been a saying about Alphabet City. Avenue A: Be Aware Avenue B: You're Brave Avenue C: You're Crazy Avenue D: You're Dead.
Travis grew up, the early years, before the horrors of the broken foster care system, on Avenue D. Before he went blind there, he saw some of the worst humanity had to offer in the overcrowded slums, drowning in alcohol, drugs and most of all, poverty. He thought he'd experienced everything - and trying to fix this place, even for a Green Lantern, has been an uphill struggle.
Especially since, in order to save it during the Blackest Night, he had to burn it down.
He's been at the repair job every time he could get away ever since - and thought that having seen it at its worst, and from the foundation up, nothing that could happen here would ever surprise him.
Not the lines at the tent cities, not the limited soup kitchen space, not the mobs huddled for warmth, not the people trying to hawk sin, skin or religion among those with no hope. Those are definitely native.
But... the construction equipment. That, he truly never expected.
