The thing about sins you'll never be clean of, no matter how tiny a fraction of your lifespan they make up? Is you get so much done with the guilt.
Case in point was Hob's latest investment. Robbie Gadling had just bought up block after ravaged block of 'Alphabet City' in Manhattan. And he was rebuilding them. He had the technology -- well, the vast amounts of carefully-squirrelled-away money, sometimes involved in buying technology. He could make them better, cleaner, more up to those building codes that were all the rage these days. And sustainably affordable? Oh, he could do that. Not like he needed to turn a profit on this.
Sir Robert Gadling still owed civilization and decency that much. He'd never stop owing, and though he'd moved on well enough most days, the nightmares kept Hob remembering.

Avenue B: You're Brave
Avenue C: You're Crazy
Avenue D: You're Dead.
Travis grew up, the early years, before the horrors of the broken foster care system, on Avenue D. Before he went blind there, he saw some of the worst humanity had to offer in the overcrowded slums, drowning in alcohol, drugs and most of all, poverty.
He thought he'd experienced everything - and trying to fix this place, even for a Green Lantern, has been an uphill struggle.
Especially since, in order to save it during the Blackest Night, he had to burn it down.
He's been at the repair job every time he could get away ever since - and thought that having seen it at its worst, and from the foundation up, nothing that could happen here would ever surprise him.
Not the lines at the tent cities, not the limited soup kitchen space, not the mobs huddled for warmth, not the people trying to hawk sin, skin or religion among those with no hope. Those are definitely native.
But... the construction equipment. That, he truly never expected.

Date: 2012-05-07 07:22 am (UTC)Hob was out supervising -- centuries of business acumen often indicated it was sometimes good for the man with the purse strings to be on the ground.
The very crowded ground. On which many people were looking up. The locals were clearly not surprised.
Flying boy. Obviously, a local flying boy. Was that the one there for The Whole Mess? Hob hadn't been there himself, certainly. This wasn't his neighborhood.
And some of his crews were staring. "I don't think the lad in the air called for a coffee break, men!" He calls out a bit chastisingly. "We have a schedule."

Date: 2012-05-07 07:58 am (UTC)This may not be Hob's neighborhood - it is his. He was born here. He destroyed it. And he brought it back to life... literally. When the blackest night slaughtered so many, his connection brought this place back to its semblance of half-life. He knows now he'll never escape it - so he's been trying to fix it. He doesn't have John's skill at engineering, know how with building codes, or a lot of other things - but he's a green lantern. That goes a long way.
"And now they're ahead of schedule. Hopefully that means someone can take enough time off to tell me what's going on here?"
Last he knew, as usual, the city of New York had higher priorities than fixing a slum.

Date: 2012-05-07 08:20 am (UTC)His papertrails are impeccable, and he's never had major contact with a Lantern of any shade before.
"Why not? I've made stranger investments. I think the last time I was in one of these moods, I built some highways in West Africa," he says honestly.

Date: 2012-05-07 08:06 pm (UTC)As far as he's concerned, the progress is not enough, not nearly - he'll be at it a while yet, but its a good start.
"Yeah, contact Warrior's Bar and let them know you need to get a hold of Travis. If I'm in system and not, you know, fighting zombies, I'll get back to you within the day."
